Rome, the capital city of Italy, rises on the banks of the River Tiber, between the mounds and hills known as the Seven Hills. It is the world richest city in masterpieces, suffice it to remember the Fountain of Trevi, St. Peter’s, Trinità dei Monti with the Spanish Steps, and the Colosseum, symbol of the city’s eternity. But what about the origin of Rome? ….the legend tells that near the banks of the Tiber a farmer lived with his wife; one night the farmer saw a she-wolf lying and feeding two babies, he caught them and took them to his house, naming them Romulus and Remus. When they grew up, the two brothers went away in order to found a new city; Romulus took a plough and on the Palatine Hill cut a furrow to outline the boundaries of the city that he called Rome. This happened on April 21st 753 B.C. However the birth of Rome marked the end of Remus’ life. Actually it had been agreed upon that nobody was allowed to walk beyond the furrow without the previous permission of the chief, but Remus, maybe by envy or just for fun, cross it with a spring and laughing he cried out: look how easy it is to enter your city! Romulus became furious, so he hurled himself upon Remus and killed him, swearing that anyone else who would offend the name of Rome would have been killed, too.
