Close to the Punta della Dogana (Point of the Customs House) is Santa Maria della Salute (St. Mary of Salvation), which was begun in 1631 by Baldassarre Longhena, wanted by the Venetians to thank the Virgin for the end of the plague; the building was finished in 1687. It is the fruit of an ingenious architectural invention founded upon an octagonal main body, with a big minor cupola and enriched with many a bell tower. It is certainly one of the symbols of the Most Serene Republic; the grand inside keeps several paintings and sculptures, among which are the Pentecost by Titian. In the Sacristy, besides four masterpieces by Titian, we also find the Cana’s Wedding by Tintoretto. The temple is the destination of a pilgrimage of Venetians on November 21st, the day dedicated to the Virgin of Salvation. |
