Pisa, a fascinating city of Tuscany, was in the past one of the four Maritime Republics together with Genoa, Amalfi and Venice, and its fleets were some of the most powerful in the Mediterranean Sea.The Leaning Tower rises on the Piazza dei Miracoli (Square of Miracles) and is one of the seven wonders of the world. This is already sufficient to give an idea of this really extraordinary monument. The building of the tower began in 1173, under the direction of Bonanno Pisano, but once reached the third floor the plan was given up because of a sinking of the ground, which caused the characteristic inclination.A century later the works were resumed by Giovanni di Simone, who trying to correct the inclination erected the Campanile up to the seventh floor. In the course of centuries the Tower went on leaning approx. 1 mm every year, that is why recently reinforced concrete injections have been made under the subsiding side, while thick steel tie beams have been fixed on the opposite side. The maximum height of the tower is 56.70 metres, and the greatest inclination reached until now is 4.60 metres. |
