According to the legend, this beautiful city plunged among hills was founded by Remus’ sons, Ascius and Senius, who had found shelter here to escape from their uncle Romulus. Maybe a background of truth exists, since a she-wolf similar to that of Rome is present in the coat of arms of Siena. The heart of the city is represented by the Piazza del Campo, which due to its conformation is unique in the whole world; situated on a slope, it is shell-shaped and has a beautiful pavement made of bricks and divided into nine gores, certainly with reference to the Government of the Nine. But Piazza del Campo is also well-known for the Palio delle Contrade (Palio of Quarters), which takes place twice in a year, on July 2nd and August 16th; on such dates, the square is covered with earth and horses and jockeys belonging to the 17 traditional contrade (the ancient districts) challenge each other in a competition recalling the mediaeval spirit of this city. |
